What is a soundfont?
A soundfont is an inexpensive way to replace your GM soundbank with higher quality sounds. Basically, you have 2 options when composing music using MIDI instruments.

You can go the route of VST instruments and purchase huge (500GB+) expensive ($1,000+) sound libraries of virtual orchestras and synth banks, or you can download soundfonts and use them instead.

Me personally, I use both for different reasons. Sometimes I need that realism and warmth that a violin gives me that soundfonts won't be able to do, but some synth soundfonts are just amazing and I can't live with out them. The choice is yours, remember this is music, CREATIVITY and open-mindedness are your friends here.

How to implement soundfonts
Whether or not your soundcard can read soundfont files depends on the manufacturer. Most (if not all) of CreativeLabs soundcards (SoundBlaster, Audigy, etc.) can read and process soundfont files. I would highly recommend purchasing one and doing some research before trying to use these files.

Soundfonts, like VST instrument libraries are stored in your RAM so the more RAM, the better and more expansive your music can be.

sfArk Files? What are these?
sfArk files are simply compressed .sf2 files. To uncompress these, download "sfArk" for Windows, Mac OSX or Linux.
